John P Graves

The following information was found in our subject files in  response to a research request today.

John P. Graves was born May 17, 1824 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia.  He married a Maria March 21, 1844 in Warren County, Missouri (Maria was the sister of William Glover, who would file a Donation Land Claim just before Graves would).  Graves settled his land claim (DLC 290) in the Abiqua region, just North and East of Silverton, Oregon (Around Township 6 South, Range 1 West, Section 13).  These records show that he settled his claim October 13, 1849.  He had at least four children: David, Philip, Sarah and Samuel Glover.

The 1878 Atlas, shows Graves continuing to own at least a portion of the original land claim, and the nearby butte bearing his name.  Graves died September 14, 1910, at age 86 years, 3 months and 27 days in Clackamas County, Oregon.

This detail image is from an atlas first published 1878 by the Edgar Williams & Company out of San Fransisco. It shows Graves’ holdings at that time.

  2. Barb (Boyles) Haldum says:

This comment comes a little late in 2016, but Philip M Graves married Ida Salina Milster, daughter of Robert Locke Milster and Nancy Hinkle. My grandmother was Ivy Nell Graves daughter of Philip and Ida Graves.

  3. Barb, glad to hear from you. I have Ida spelled as Milford (that from the Western States Marriage Index, p 557), and a recheck shows that I mistyped Milster. Duh! Thanks for pointing that out.
I do have Iva (or Ivy Nell), b 7/10/1885, based on her Delayed Birth Certificate. It is not, however, dated, nor does it have the married name it ordinarily would.
Any additional information you have would be appreciated. I am the 2nd ggranddaughter of Jack Graves sister, Catherine, who married John Henry Palmer. On the off chance you do not have pics of Jack and Maria, let me know. I do. I also have Jett and (I think) Tom. What I don’t have (and wish I did) was a picture of William J (who married Soledad Pico). If you are interested, they are on the website
    Thanks for commenting!
